The Hiroshima chair emits the impression of a traditional and classic wooden chair, but Naoto Fukasawa with Maruni uses advanced technology and craftsmanship to create a new clean and modern viewpoint of the wooden armchair. Hiroshima seems to be hand-carved from a solid block of wood because of its seamless joints achieved by computer-aided routers that precisely cut the raw wood to ensure a perfect fit upon assembly. Craftsmen sand these chairs to a a smooth finish to give it a silky texture. The beautiful color of the beech and oak wood used for the collection gives the piece a natural look and recalls traditional Japanese wood chairs, while the organic shape of the curved back and the tapering along the arm beautifully suggest a modern aesthetic. These seats are comfortable and roomy enough to be used as a either a dining or lounge chair. A good example of taking inspiration for history and updating it to fit with the times both functionally and aesthetically.
