On the occasion of Milan Design Week 2014, British designer Tom Dixon presented a new line of furniture, lighting and accessories under the theme of ‘club’. The historic British Members Club is reimagined as a contemporary version of the gentleman’s hangout — a modern day home-away-from-home, a plush, exquisite haven where work and play collide. From cocktail shakers to cozy seaters,’club’ comprises a palette of brilliant metallic colors — with silver lined lamps, golden plated pendants, and tactile finishes with new functions.
Describing the collection’s traditional source of influence, Dixon says ‘a misspent youth spent in the london warehouse club scene, and a more recent series of experimental interiors designed for the new breed of private clubs are the reasons why we have chosen to reinvigorate the fabled british members club into a futuristic social environment.’
New products presented in Milan include additions to the popular ‘beat‘ family, inspired by the sculptural simplicity of traditional water vessels used in india. Both table and floor lights incorporate the hand-beaten shade.
The design and inception of the Beat Lights originated from a field trip to India that Tom Dixon took his Royal College students on. Their mission was to investigate how design affects the livelihood of different cultures and peoples. They spent days with local tinkerers, brass beaters and marble workers. It was there that they discovered a method of metal manufacturing that appealed to them because of its heritage and unique aesthetic. The Beat Lights employ these traditional techniques in their production.
Inspired by the shapes of traditional Indian water vessels. Beat Light – Tall is a pendant made from spun brass with a hand-beaten interior. Choose from high gloss white powder coat, black patinated finish or brushed brass. Provides direct illumination.
