Rear wheel driving is back! In a fun way.

The new Scion FR-S was created from a joint project between Toyota and Subaru. The FR-S is Scion’s version and the BR-Z is Subaru’s. These Japanese twins come with a direct injected 2.0 liter front-mounted flat four engine, also known as a BOXER engine! It delivers 200hp and 151 lb-ft torque, it’s mounted low enough into the chassis to give a lower center of gravity than a Porche Cayman, according to Scion.

A six speed manual gear box, McPherson struts found up front and a multilink set-up suspends the rear of the car. Brakes are vented discs front and rear at 11.6 and 11.4 inches, respectively, and 17 inch wheels are standard.

Testing the car up to speed, it is clear that the engine is no powerhouse, that said, power is more than adequate, and the way the engine spins up feels smooth and quick. It achieves a 6.2 second 0-to-60 mph time. The FR-S has an impressive quick turn-in and light, toss-able feel. The steering is phenomenal, placing the car accurately and transmitting enough feel to let the driver know what is happening under the tire.

The FR-S is about more than just performance numbers. It is about driving dynamics, and making driving once again fun.
