Faced with a seating space problem in their new office’s auditorium, Ziba Design set out to develop seating that would close to be less than four inches thick, a feat which had not previously been accomplished in this application. The result is the JumpSeat. Ziba did not invent the jumpseat, not by a long shot, but they have implemented such beautiful design and materials into their adaptation that it is left in a league all its own winning many awards and accolades including the Interiors & Sources Readers’ Choice Award, Best of NeoCon Silver Award, Architectural Products Product Innovation Award, IIDEX Innovation Award, Best of NeoCon Editors’ Choice Award, and the Core77 Professional Notable Award.

The folding mechanism is based on the human spine and although thin and aesthetically pleasing, the JumpSeat has been tested to hold up to 600 pounds, which is very impressive. JumpSeats are available from Sedia Systems in three different models, some with optional equipment. JumpSeat Wall is wall-mounted for when short-term seating is needed but space is limited. It’s is the most utilitarian model of the the three and features a 1-inch-thick cushion on both the back and sitting surface. JumpSeat is the original model and is available with armrests and either a .5 or 1-inch-thick cushion. The JumpSeat 3D is also available with armrests, and incorporates a -inch-thick three-dimentional upholstered foam cushion, available in multiple patterns and colors. All models of JumpSeats are manufactured from No Added Urea-Formaldehyde plywood that is SCS-certified as 100% pre-consumer recycled wood.
